Author’s Note: Viewership of this movie should be to thoes of the adult age, because of mature language and content of the film itself.

COME AS YOU ARE, starring Academy Award nominated Gabourey Sidibe (EMPIRE, PRECIOUS), Grant Rosenmeyer (THE ROYAL TENENBAUMS), Ravi Patel (MEET THE PATELS), Hayden Szeto (THE EDGE OF SEVENTEEN) & Janeane Garofalo (WET HOT AMERICAN SUMMER).

In COME AS YOU ARE, three young men with disabilities (Grant Rosenmeyer, Hayden Szeto, and Ravi Patel) flee their overbearing parents on a road trip to a brothel in Montreal catering to people with special needs. Sam (Gabourey Sidibe), a traveling nurse, drives the three guys across the border as they go on this trip to lose their virginity and embrace their independence.  The film is based on the Belgian film HASTA LA VISTA, inspired by the life of Asta Philpot, who also appears in the film.

Come As You Are is a coming of age movie about three guys who decide to go on a once in a lifetime trip to lose their virginity. Instead, they come away with something more - a life-long friendship. One of my favorite scenes was the bar scene,  where Scottie (played by, Grant Rosenmeyer,) kicks the drunk guy out of the bar by ramming him with his chair. I also love the relationship between all three gentlemen. In particular, the friendship that was made between Scottie and Matt. (Played by, Hayden Szeto.) I loved the chemistry between Sam and Mo. (Played by, Gabourey Sidibe and Ravi Patel. ) As well.

In my opinion, Come As You Are is a movie that will leave you feeling pretty good after watching it. Being someone with a disability myself, I found it very relatable emotions wise. I also think this movie would be a good film to share with friends, especially friends who may be curious about the disability community or to help them better understand the disability community in general. I honestly thought this movie was going to something I found so offensive that I couldn’t even watch it. I was wrong. This movie had me laughing out loud several times.

I know people have their own opinions about actors taking on the role of someone who has a disability when they aren't disabled themselves, but I enjoyed the betrayal of the characters as a whole. Yes, I believe there should be a wider range of diverse disability communities in mainstream media, but that’s not the only place we need representation either. I hope when you watch this movie you think about that as well as how you would want to be treated if you found yourself the outcast by society. Because anyone can become disabled at any time. I hope when February 14th, 2020, comes around everyone goes to see this movie, and who knows, maybe you’ll become inspired to go on a road trip with your best friends and let adventure take you where it may.
