Panic Disorder

People with this disorder have recurrent and unexpected attacks.

What Are Panic Attacks?

  • They are sudden periods of time where someone feels an extreme sense of fear that can intensify and peak within minutes. Attacks can be both unexpected and or brought on by a trigger such as,  a certain situation or object you are fearful of. Some of the signs of a panic attack may include the following:
  • Heart palpitations/heart-pounding/high heart rate
  • Sweating
  • Trembling/shaking
  • Feelings of shortness of breath/smothering/chocking
  • Feelings of impending doom

Typically people with this disorder, worry about when the next attack will happen, so they begin to avoid situations/activities that may trigger or may not trigger an attack all together. This behavior could also cause more harm to the disorder, with the person can develop a phobia or phobias.

What Is A Phobia?

A phobia is an intense fear or aversion to a certain situation or thing.  Unlike being typically anxious over an event, with a phobia that fear can be unrealistic to how serious/dangerous the situation actually is.

Specific Phobias (simple phobias) What are they?

It is fear based on something specific such as,  flying, heights, dogs, spiders, and so on.

What is Social Anxiety Disorder (formally known as social phobia)

People with this disorder have anxiety over situations that require the person to be social, And worry their anxiety will cause them at act based on how anxious they are, and because of that they also fear being embarrassed by it.

What Is Agoraphobia?

Typically people with this phobia have an intense fear of one or more of the following:

  • Using public transportation
  • Being in open spaces/being in inclosed spaces
  • Standing in a line/or being in a crowd
  • Being outside your home alone

Often people with this phobia avoid these situations because they might find it difficult to leave the situation occurs, or being embarrassed by having an attack in said situation. Having this disorder can be so severe that the person can become housebound.

What Is Separation Anxiety Disorder?

Typically separation anxiety is assumed to be only linked between a child and their parent. However, separation anxiety can also occur for adults as well. People with this disorder have fears about being apart from people with whom they are attached to.  People with  this disorder often fear that something bad will occur while they are separated. So this can lead they person to avoid situations where a separation could occur. You have even experience physical symptoms with this condition.

What Is Selective Mutism?

This is a rare condition linked to anxiety where the person fails to speak even thought they have the language skills  to do so. This condition is usually diagnosed before the child turns five years old. It is typically associated with being extremely shy, being afraid of being embarrassed in social situations,  compulsive traits, withdrawal, clinging behavior, and temper tantrums. Typically, people with this disorder are often diagnosed with more than one anxiety disorder.

What Are The Risk Factors Linked To Anxiety?

Research has shown evidence in anxiety being linked to genetics and environmental links to developing an anxiety disorder. Please note, that risk factors can vary depending on what type of anxiety the person is diagnosed with. However, there are also generalized risk factor linked to anxiety overall. The following list some of those factors.

  • Temperamental traits of shyness or behavioral inhibition in childhood
  • Exposure to stressful and negative life or environmental events in early childhood or adulthood
  • A history of anxiety or other mental illnesses in biological relatives
  • Some physical health conditions, such as thyroid problems or heart arrhythmias, or caffeine or other substances/medications, can produce or aggravate anxiety symptoms; a physical health examination is helpful in the evaluation of a possible anxiety disorder.
